🔁 Reverse Shoulder Replacement
Advanced Shoulder Care at Anand Ortho Care Centre – Rohini, Delhi
By Dr. Ritesh Dang – Senior Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon
💡 What Is Reverse Shoulder Replacement?
Reverse Shoulder Replacement is a specialized type of shoulder arthroplasty performed when the rotator cuff muscles are severely damaged or torn, and traditional shoulder replacement is not suitable.
In this procedure, the normal ball-and-socket structure of the shoulder is reversed:
The ball component is placed on the shoulder blade (scapula)
The socket is placed on the upper arm bone (humerus)
This reversal allows other muscles—primarily the deltoid muscle—to take over the function of the damaged rotator cuff.
✅ Who Needs Reverse Shoulder Replacement?
This surgery is ideal for patients with:
Massive, irreparable rotator cuff tears
Cuff tear arthropathy (arthritis due to rotator cuff damage)
Failed previous shoulder replacement
Severe shoulder arthritis with poor muscle function
Complex shoulder fractures, especially in older adults
Chronic shoulder instability and pain
